Phonics and Reading Scheme
Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) is our chosen Phonics Scheme at Swan Lane First School. The aim of ELS is ‘Getting all children to read well, quickly’. It teaches children to read by identifying the phonemes (the smallest unit of sound) and graphemes (the written version of the sound) within words and using these to read words.
Our reading scheme throughout the school is based around the Oxford Reading Tree Books. This includes Floppy Phonics, Biff, Chip and Kipper Decode and Develop, Traditional Tales, Songbirds Phonics, Biff, Chip and Kipper Classic Stories, Snapdragons ,All Stars and Project X Decodable Stories. We supplement this scheme by using books from the Collins "Big Cat" scheme.
