Language LeaderS

A warm welcome from our Language Leaders!

Our school community is very diverse: we welcome families from all over the world, and many of the pupils at Swan Lane First School are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).  We are very proud of our multicultural heritage and we love to celebrate the many different countries and cultures represented in our school.

Swan Lane First School's Language Leaders are a group of multi-lingual students in Key Stage 2.

We are able to speak, read and write fluently in both English and our home languages, and we use our amazing linguistic skills to help and support children and families within our school community who are new to English.

We can help by:

  • Welcoming new EAL learners to our school;
  • Interpreting for children who are new to English;
  • Sharing books in our home languages with younger children; and
  • Helping to make bilingual resources with our teachers.

Between us, we can speak an incredible 17 different additional languages!

Starting a new school and using a new language every day can be daunting, and although children quickly learn to understand and speak English at Swan Lane First School, we can help them to settle in swiftly by offering key resources and support in their home languages.

Recently, some of the Language Leaders have been helping to create special bilingual Welcome Packs for children who are new to English.  We hope that, by providing key information in a variety of different languages, we will help new families to feel welcomed into our school community, and ensure that they have all the information they need about starting school at Swan Lane.

Look out for our special Language Leader badges and our welcome information in the school's Reception area.

We love to share bilingual reading books with our friends!
