Meet the Team
Year 1 is a magical year when you will start to see your child developing the skills they learnt in Reception and applying further. We aim to develop a real love of learning in all children and self-belief that they can achieve whatever they want.
The main areas that we will focus on in Literacy and Numeracy are:
Everything we do is about building the children’s confidence as writers to allow their imagination to come through. We will work on accurate use of capital letters, punctuation, fingerspaces, spelling (using phonics and ‘High Frequency Words’) and handwriting. You will start to see your child using these basic skills expertly and adding exciting details into their writing.
A love of reading is essential, so we will actively promote this. We will work on the confidence, speed and accuracy of reading (using phonics and High Frequency Words). We will look to develop sight reading to increase fluency. It is massively important that children understand what they have read and can talk about books.
Basic number skills are massively important, so that will be our main focus throughout the year, initially with numbers to 20, then increasingly up to 100. We will look at different adding and subtracting methods. Big Maths and the Learn Its will help to support the children’s basic skills and allow them to practise these weekly.
Other Curriculum Areas
We have included the full yearly plan for other areas so that you can see what your child is learning about at any time. We want to encourage an all-round love of learning and help children to identify their skills and interests in different areas. Your child will have lots of opportunities to learn about a range of topics and further their skills in many areas. We feel that this wide and varied learning is incredibly important to help develop well-rounded individuals who enjoy learning.
We have included sheets with the phonics sounds and High Frequency Words that we will be studying this year (along with recapping individual letter sounds). There are also several practice maths sheets which focus on the four key areas of the maths Learn Its.
We look forward to having a wonderful year in which all children in Year 1 will achieve and have fun.
All the best,
The Year 1 Team
